Apple Butter Old Fashioned

This recipe was concocted to satisfy the adventurous spirit in all of us. The key to this cocktail is cooking down the Sunrise Magic® apples and creating a robust natural butter to complement the bitters and bourbon. Be sure to save the leftover butter to use as a spread on pancakes, bread, french toast and more!

Ingredients

Apple Butter

  • 4 Sunrise Magic® apples, peeled, cored and diced
  • 2 tbsp apple cider vinegar
  • ½ cup water, divided
  • ½ cup coconut sugar
  • 1 lemon, juiced
  • Cinnamon sticks

Old Fashioned – makes 1 cocktail

  • 2 tsp homemade apple butter
  • 2-3 dashes bitters
  • 2.5 oz bourbon
  • Orange peel, for garnish
  • Apple slices, for garnish

Directions

  1. Heat a heavy bottom pan over low heat. Add the apples, ¼ cup water, and apple cider vinegar to the pot. Cook on low for about 1 hour, stirring occasionally.
  2. After about 1 hour, add the coconut sugar, cinnamon, lemon, and the remaining ¼ cup water. Stir and cook for another hour, until everything is tender and cooked down.
  3. Remove from the heat and let cool.
  4. Add everything to a blender and blend until smooth. Store in an airtight container in the fridge.
  5. To make the cocktail, add 2 tsp of the apple butter to a cocktail shaker, followed by 2-3 dashes of bitters, and 2.5 oz bourbon. Place a large ice cube in the cocktail shaker and use a cocktail spoon to stir until chilled and mixed.
  6. Place a large ice cube in your serving glass, and pour the stirred cocktail over the ice. Garnish with an apple slice and orange peel if desired.
